The first section of the Reader introduces the child to the consonant-vowel-consonant (short vowel) phonetic pattern. Hands-on activities with letter cards and a worksheet prepare the child to read each story. After ample opportunity to read and write words of this pattern have been provided, the long-vowel/silent e pattern is introduced and used in stories.
